Benefits from Waterjet Cutting Technology

Waterjet Cutting Technology: The Power of Water

Cutting with Water Jets can cut through metals up to 150mm thick. This is done by propelling water up to 2000mph through rigid, high pressure hoses and jets at a pressure of up to 60,000PSI, these jets can contain abrasive substances, such as garnet which erode away the material. Jet cutters have no problem slicing though Stainless Steel, Titanium, Tool Steel or even Armour Plating. Water cutting is typically used for cutting, excision or ablation (removing parts); structuring and can lend it to cutting items with sandwich structures or have a combination of materials.

High accuracy means that tolerances are low, about 0.08mm, which eliminates the need for secondary processes. This permits manufacturers to use waterjet cutting to finish projects in fewer steps, saving production costs and reducing completion time. No chemical impact or high temperatures denote that material yields are greatly improved and thermal stresses don’t occur. Crystallization and hardening of the metal are also eradicated.

Maintenance of water jet nozzles, hosing, seals and valves need to be done regularly to sustain performance. Most of the water used is recycled and there are no resulting effects on the environment such as smoke or dust. Systems available are automated using precision cutting control software reducing required employee training time.

Innovative process and efficient production

The Water jet cutting method is safe, clean and environmentally friendly due to no gases or vapours being generated during the cutting process. No additional costs due to lower processing speed or reworking are incurred which improves efficiency

Most of the water used in the jets is recycled and the abrasive cutting substances can be removed leaving no adverse effects on the environment.
